How to dress better after 25: seven quiet rules

Somewhere after twenty-five, the way you dress starts to say something whether you want it to or not. The good news: dressing well is not about trends or a bigger budget. It is about a handful of quiet decisions, repeated until they become habit.

1. Fit comes before everything

A modest jacket that fits will always look better than an expensive one that does not. Shoulders should end where yours end, sleeves should show a little shirt cuff, and trousers should touch the shoe with a slight break or none at all. A good tailor is the best investment you will make.

2. Build on a neutral base

Navy, grey, camel, white, olive and brown work together in almost any combination. Start with these and add colour in small doses: a tie, a knit, a pocket square.

3. Buy fewer, better pieces

One well-made overcoat will outlast three fashionable ones. Look for natural fibres such as wool, cotton, linen and leather, and for details that hold up: clean stitching, real buttons and fabric with some weight.

4. Let texture do the talking

Flannel, tweed, corduroy, cable knits and suede add depth without noise. An outfit in three textures of the same colour looks far richer than one in three loud colours.

5. Look after your shoes

People notice shoes. Keep them polished, use cedar shoe trees, and rotate pairs so the leather can rest. A clean pair of loafers lifts even the simplest outfit.

6. Dress one step above the occasion

Not overdressed, simply considered. A knit polo instead of a T-shirt, loafers instead of trainers, a blazer when others wear a hoodie. Small steps, noticed by everyone.

7. Keep it quiet

Real elegance rarely needs a logo. Let the cut, the fabric and the way you wear it speak for you.
