Five ways to wear a navy blazer

If you own one jacket, make it a navy blazer. It sits comfortably between a suit and casual wear, and it works in every season. Here are five ways to wear it.

1. The classic

Navy blazer, white oxford shirt, grey flannel trousers and dark brown loafers. It has worked for a hundred years and it will work for a hundred more.

2. Weekend by the water

Swap the flannels for cream chinos, open the collar and wear suede loafers without socks. Relaxed, but still put together.

3. With knitwear

In colder months, wear a fine merino or cashmere crewneck under the blazer instead of a shirt. Grey, camel and cream all sit well against navy.

4. With denim

Dark, clean jeans with no distressing, a light blue shirt and brown suede shoes. Ideal for dinners and evenings out.

5. Dressed up

Add a tie in burgundy or green, a crisp white pocket square and polished oxfords. It is the easiest way to look sharp at a wedding or an important meeting.

What to look for

Choose a soft wool or wool-blend fabric, a natural shoulder and a length that covers your seat. Single-breasted is the most versatile; double-breasted with metal buttons is more traditional and nautical.
