Cashmere, merino and the cable knit
Share
A good sweater is the most comfortable way to look elegant. Knowing the yarns helps you choose the right one and keep it for years.
Cashmere
The softest and warmest for its weight. Ideal as a fine crewneck or roll neck under a jacket. Look for a dense knit that springs back when you stretch it, and expect a little pilling at first: it is normal and easy to remove with a comb.
Merino wool
Fine, smooth and breathable, merino is the everyday workhorse. It layers neatly under blazers, does not itch, and works from autumn into spring.
Lambswool and shetland
Warmer, slightly rougher and full of character. Perfect for the countryside, weekends and cold mornings, worn over a collared shirt.
The cable knit
The fisherman's cable knit in cream, navy or bottle green is the most iconic sweater in classic menswear. Wear it with corduroy or flannel trousers and leather boots, or over a button-down shirt with the collar showing.
How to wear knitwear
Fine knits under tailoring, chunky knits on their own or under a field jacket.
Let the shirt collar sit neatly over a crewneck.
Choose classic colours: navy, camel, grey, cream and green.
Care
Hand wash cold or use a wool cycle, dry flat and never hang knitwear. Fold it and store it with cedar to keep moths away.
